scaphoid update
Well I wish I could say “thank you to everyone for the lovely comments about my probably-broken wrist” but actually nobody commented on that post. hrmmpph!
I will update you anyway, so there. I am now wearing a splint that has a metal bar in it for support and I sheepishly realised that I was checking out how it was made and the stitching and design while deciding whether to buy this one or not. My doctor recommended that I wear this all the time until my MRI appointment. Unfortunately nothing out of the ordinary showed up in the X-ray so the MRI is the next stage.
There is a great site with info on scaphoid fractures that says:
What is so special about this fracture? Because the bone is entirely inside the joint, there are some unique things about this fracture. The patient frequently overlooks the fracture because it feels like “just a sprain.” There is often only a little swelling and a variable amount of pain may be present. Usually, the swelling will go away in a few days. Unlike the forearm, hand, and finger bones, fractures of the scaphoid almost never show any obvious deformity of the wrist. “It doesn’t look broken.” These factors can make it common for the diagnosis to be delayed for weeks, months or occasionally even years after the initial injury because the patient or his doctor thinks it is just a common wrist sprain.
I will probably need to have a cast fitted and the doctor said that as there was such a delay (I had the fall about a month ago) I will probably need to wear it for 10 to 12 weeks. egads! I am just so glad it is not my right arm. I have found that I can sew while wearing the splint and as long as I don’t do anything that hurts the doctor says it’s okay.
So far, this fall has cost me: my pride, two skinned knees, $50 for GP appointment 1, $90 for an Xray that showed nothing, $95 for second GP appointment, $50 for the splint and the MRI is due to cost about $300. YAY!

I am glad you can still craft! That’s if you can afford to buy supplies after all those medical bills…$300 for an MRI ! and for $50 bucks you’d reckon they give you a splint with a bit of colour (or at least a choice of colour) You might be able to choose a cool colour for your cast - what a design oppurtunity!
Sorry you felt neglected, I think it must be the blogging world having clogged bloglines, seems everybody is talking about how long their list is these days and how tough it is to get through them all). I’m so sorry about your wrist, by I’m with pyglet, I think for all those bill they should knit you some fantastic cast cozy. Take care of yourself.
I fractured my scaphoid,they are able to tell after the MRI and the cast is a pain,please let me know if I can help.

hi, just random googled ended up here interesting. I feel your pain, i broke my scaphoid a year and 7 months ago on holidays, two operations a bone graph numerous casts an a couple of screws later, jst got told bout 2wks ago that its knitted al way across the bone. wudnt wish it on anyone havent been able to play any physical sport in that time nor just yet either. lots of physio now, iv lost bout 45 degreze movement! be happy to answer any queries!!!
did u get pins or screws in your hand???
No to both. I wore a splint for a long time though. Eventually it healed and it’s fine now.
Hello to everyone. I have a fractured scaphoid bone in my right hand. I injured it playing football & then doubled the problem when i met in an accident about 2 weeks after. I did an unsuccessful surgery because the xray shows that the screw was not inserted properly to compress the bones, don’t know why this stress had to reach me.
Anyway i am schedule for another surgery (REFASHIONING OF SCREW RIGHT SCAPHOID). LIFE, SIGH…Darn procedure hurts so much when healing. I am wearing a splint. How long did you guys fracture take to heal? Did you all did physiotherapy?
