Paint n Play

Yesterday I had such a great day! In the morning Emma and I went along to a free “Paint n Play” session at a local park. It is an initiative of Communities@Work that is part of a bunch of schemes set up to help mums at home with kids who might be feeling isolated. This was the first Paint n Play on the Southside but we were told that the same thing has been running on the Northside and regularly gets around 70 people coming along. There were heaps of mums and kids there yesterday so the organisers were really pleased.

They had paint easels set up, playdough tables, a huge container of rice to run your fingers through (or sit in, as some toddlers did!), puzzles on mats, buckets full of water with paint brushes to “paint” the pavement, giant chalk to draw on the ground and even provided water and fruit for the kids.

It was great for the mums to chat and meet new people and some of us even knew each other from other groups, such as the Brindabella Women’s Group, which I recently joined. The kids, of course, all had a fantastic time. There were no fights over toys or tantrums and we reasoned it was probably because there was such a great range of things for them to do.

It was also really nice to be able to totally relax as a parent, knowing there were heaps of other mums and friendly organisers there helping to look after each other’s kids - a real community at work! If you are in Canberra, then I encourage you to come along - leave me a comment and I will get back to you with the details.
