hot as hell

written by Jen on Sunday, February 8, 20095 Comments

It’s hot as hell.  Yesterday I was at the Handmade Market and it was a stinking hot 40 degrees (104).  By 3.30pm I pretty much lost the plot.  I have always been prone to heat stress, keeling over every now and then at concerts, shopping centres, choir performances, fairs and festivals over the years.  Yesterday I was aware of the possibility so I did everything I could - sipping water all the time, making sure I ate a proper lunch and snacked on the right sorts of foods, splashed water on my face, neck and arms in the bathrooms regularly, fanned myself to the point of RSI in my wrists almost, and sat down as often as I could so I wasn’t on my feet for too long.  It didn’t matter though and by 3.30 I went for help.

When I am about to faint I always cry uncontrollably (and I can’t speak) but I quickly got the message across that I wasn’t upset, just that I was about to pass out!  The super-wonderful ladies at Handmade laid me down somewhere quiet and got me ice packs and water and looked after me.  The market organiser Julie stood at my stall for over half an hour while we waited for my husband to get there and my dad came and helped me out too.  I lay on a comfy couch and willed my body to get it together, but whenever I had to stand up to go to the toilet (at least my kidneys were doing their job!) I started crying again and got all tingly and lost my hearing and stumbled my way to the toilet as fast as I could manage, trying not to pass out.  After about an hour, we realised I wasn’t going to get any better so I went back to Mum and Dad’s while Paul looked after my stall and packed it all up for me.  Mum and Dad looked after me (and the kids) and I hopped into a lovely cool bath and laid there for a long time until I finally felt a bit more back to normal.

The weather and the heat were the main topic of conversation at the market and plenty of people, shoppers and stall holders alike, had little paper fans (including me) that got a real workout.  There was no air conditioning or anything else happening at the Albert Hall - I would love to know what the indoor temperature was.  It was SO SO SO hot and it didn’t let up all day.  We had a good amount of people through and I made a decent amount in sales so it worked out well.

I’m feeling a lot better today but I have to make sure I rehydrate all the time or I quickly feel washed out and wrecked again.  I owe a  huge thankyou to Julie Nicholls (market organiser) and the other ladies who helped me out. You all did a wonderful job and I really felt looked after. Thanks especially to Julie for manning my stall.

I can’t even begin to say how awful I feel for those in Victoria who have lost loved ones and homes in the fires.  It really is as hot as hell.
