fashion inspiration
Hi! Are you a new or recent visitor to my blog? I hope you stick around and have a bit of a read. To make it easier to keep up to date with new content, please subscribe to my RSS feed. Of course, feedback is always appreciated and leaving a comment is a great way for me to come and check out your site.
I have been thinking a lot about my wardrobe lately. Well, actually, thinking about what’s IN my wardrobe. Thinking about what I wear every day and what I want to wear, how I want to look, how I want to feel (comfortable!) and what I can sew for myself to fit all of these requirements.
I am a big fan of saving images from everywhere and putting them in folders on my computer and I have been saving fashion pics more and more lately, until I realised this was saying something to me and I better listen. I remember last year in Winter (yes, I’m in Australia, it’s getting cold here) I had broken my arm and was in a cast up to my armpit. This kinda restricted my dressing and my care about fashion so I spent almost the whole Winter wearing zip-up tops (sorry, hoodies as the cool kids call them) that were unzipped to let my broken arm cast hang out. I still have all those hoodies of course, and this Winter already I am finding that I am just a little bored of jeans and hoodies.

With my kids getting older all the time and having more time and space (physical, mental and emotional) for myself, it’s time to look to ME and enjoy my clothes as more of an extension of who I am and who I want to be.
I like to look nice, fashionable and be comfortable and I have never been a slave to fashion. Not having to dress up for work means it is so easy to just wear jeans and sneakers and a hoodie every day, and while that is fine, I have been yearning to take a bit more trouble to look a bit more up to date.
To be honest, I just want to have a bit of fun with fashion - I think as a work at home mum (in those early busy years at least) you can forget to take part in the fashion world.

Can you believe all the grey around at the moment? I am not a big fan of grey marle (shudder) but if grey is everywhere then I will probably grow to like it again.
I do like the dark grey - it seems quite utilitarian and serious. I am loving the tunic style tops that are everywhere. Worn as dresses (gasp!) by the young and thin, I would wear them with jeans or trousers of course.

There are a lot of stripes about again as well. You know I do worry about sayings like “If you remember the trend from the first time around, then you shouldn’t be wearing it the second time” and of course as you get older you realise fashion trends truly do just keep cycling around and around.

There is another saying which can send chills up your back… “mutton dressed up as lamb” and this one is something we probably should keep in mind as we get older. As I check out what the Young People are wearing at the mall, it is painfully obvious that I am no longer one of them. Nor would I want to be, but you do forget how old they see you as, how old I would have seen myself as when I was their age. I don’t think being 37 should stop me from borrowing a bit from the look of the Young People though.
I have been seeing what people are wearing as I am out and about, seeing what people who DO dress up just a little are wearing. Winter always seems a bit of a fashion challenge for me anyhow, as I am definitely not going to freeze just to look good (I used to do that at 17 though, same as the Young Hotties are doing these days) so my clothes need to be comfy and warm as well as look good.
Of course, we mustn’t forget layering for that extra warmth. It is amazing how much warmer you feel when wearing a long jersey top underneath your outerwear top. The layered look is very in right now and it’s a great way to introduce a small splash of colour to your outfit.
Tunics have been catching my eye for a while now and I am keen to sew a few up, they can be worn over the top of something warmer.
I don’t wear too many shirts (blouses) but I do love the look of them and I ought to wear them more often. There are lots of very cute features on shirts right now - ruffles, cap sleeves, binding on sleeves, and tie waists are all very cute. I am certainly in the mood for more feminine clothes.
I like the long shirts too, again some cute features like elastic gathered sleeves and tie waists. Trim and maybe a little ruffle. Cute for your daughter and cute for mummy too.

There’s a lot to be said for adding a bit of trim and wearing your hair in plaits too!
The first eight photos are from the Supre website, then Simplicity Built by Wendy 4111 and 3964, then Simplicity 3790, New Look 6704, and the last two are from a Japanese craft book - ISBN 4834724778.
So, there is some of my inspiration, and maybe some for you too - I hope to make some tops like the ones above over the next month or so. I would love to hear from you if you have any ideas or words of wisdom on this issue so go on, delurk for a minute and leave a comment! ![]()

I am crazy about tunics! I love them. They just really help disguise that “mommy” pooch so well. They are so comfy and you don’t have to worry about everyone seeing your business when you are wearing them with low rise pants as you do with other shirts/tops/blouses.
