3 hours

Hi! Are you a new or recent visitor to my blog? I hope you stick around and have a bit of a read. To make it easier to keep up to date with new content, please subscribe to my RSS feed. Of course, feedback is always appreciated and leaving a comment is a great way for me to come and check out your site.

You can do a lot in three hours.  I found that out today when I was on a mission and a tight timeframe.  In between last minute Christmas shopping and picking up the kids from school, I had barely three hours… and two huge blank canvases.  These canvases were bought months ago and hung white and naked (and still shrink wrapped) in their places, waiting patiently for the paint to be applied - and then nothing happened for so long!  Today was the day for action.

I picked out some paints and purchased pretty printed paper from Pepe’s Papierie (say that 5 times fast) and got to work.  I have never worked on such large canvases before - they are almost a metre square (just over a yard) and so I decided to work outside.  I have a tendency to be impatient for paint layers to dry before adding another colour so I thought the sun would come in handy as a giant heat gun.  Unfortunately, I realised too late that it also acted as a giant cooker on my skin and I now have a lovely red, hot and sore patch on the back of my neck and the backs of my arms.

I didn’t take any in-progress photos as I was working so fast and making such a mess along the way but I can show you the finished result, hanging back on my wall in time for the 3pm school pickup.

To be honest, I’m not sure I love them but they look a lot better than they did this morning.  The colours are perfect for that area as the wall behind will soon be a light blue, and of course I wanted to reference the red couch.  I’m still not sure if they need something more (or less?) so I will study them for a few days and see what comes to me.

What do you think?  Any suggestions?

handmade market

Listen up Canberra people!  I will be at the Handmade Upmarket this Saturday 21st November at Albert Hall from 10am to 6pm and I really hope to see some of you there.  Pop in and say hello!

handmade_market

It’s a great chance to get some Christmas shopping done and there will be over 50 handmade businesses there on the day. I will be bringing a bunch of my Red Instead stuff including handbags, zip purses, art and prints, children’s hats, women’s doily singlets and more.

Not sure if I have many of those belts left actually - I think they all went at the last market I did.   It’s all been a bit rush rush!  Lots of doily singlets and other goodies though.

I’ve been doing a little bit more art and collage work lately.  This one will be there for sale tomorrow actually - I call it Fly Away Bird:

You might remember the canvas above looked like this a little while ago:

I did this next one in my Art Journal and I’m loving the textured blue:

I’m very excited because even though it was my last Mixed Media and Collage class with Rebecca last night, a few of us from the class (Rebecca, Kim and I, at least) are going to continue meeting up for an art night every Thursday!  YAY!

rain and rainbows

I drew in my art journal again tonight. I didn’t know where it was heading but it got there in the end.

rain and rainbows

The handwritten text says things like “the clouds of responsibility bring the water for life” - with the words on the edges of the clouds being: work, life, read, relax, magazines, photos, craft, art, sewing, blogging, draw, write, think, work, children, husband, home. I guess that about covers it!

The rain is falling from the clouds and yet the puppy is still playing happily. More scribbled text says “why are there so many songs about rainbows?” and “the lovers… the dreamers, and me”

Also “the rain brings relief - washes away the grime of the every day” and “gone are the dark clouds… it’s gonna be a bright sunshiney day”. [click to view it bigger]

new collages

Today I made another two collages. They are available to buy at www.redinstead.com.au, of course!

I like the second one best. What do you think?
