ceramics and other craftiness

Okay so I love a good bandwagon to jump on! Here are my soft trees - lots more at this flickr group. Thanks to the free pattern from Stephanie at little birds:

Still on the Christmas crafty theme… here are the stockings I made for Jack and Emma two years ago:

And some more ceramic painting for Christmas presents. This is a little gardening set - we will plant something nice in the pot and there is a matching little red watering can. Emma will miss the little metal watering cans - she has enjoyed playing “ephernants” with them.  That’s elephants to the rest of us.  Don’t you love the imagination?

The words say “adopt the pace of nature” and I did another set with the words “flowers feed the soul”:

Here is another spotty coffee mug set - the dots are red, orange and blue on a lime green background:

The next lot are teeny tiny and will go to Emma to use in dolly tea parties. They are not my favourite but I do like the green dots.

The truth is I got these from a thrift store - the cup and saucer had the words Vittoria plastered over it and the mug had the name of some obscure tourist place. They are so little and cute and I thought that the ceramic paint would cover the words, but alas it did not. The black pen covered it though so that explains the big black flowers:

I’m sure Emma will love them - the kids love anything mummy makes! :)

more ceramic painting!

I told you I was gonna do more of this! I think it is officially a New Craft for me - like I didn’t have enough hobbies already! Again, these are done on dollar store or thrifted ceramic items using Pebeo Porcelaine paints.

Okay first up… don’t knock your work onto the floor because it will make you really cranky:

oops

Fine - I didn’t like it anyway. (I have to say that!)

Still on the Christmas present theme, this is a bright and spotty vase, again made with stick-on spots that act as a mask (like a reverse stencil) which are then peeled off and the orange added:

I think these are my favourites for the day - tea for two. I thrifted these mugs from the local Vinnies and they were plain except for the word “TEA” which I thought I could work into a design. I ended up cutting a word bubble from a sticker and used some thin tape to mask off the lines, which I then added dots to. Colours are Agate Orange and a Peridot Green fine pen for the dots.

I am going to get my husband to plant something pretty in this pot:

How did I do it? I just pressed a Heidi Swapp (scrapbooking) mask over the pot and sponged the red on. Here is a pic of the mask:

This is a cute little jug that I did quickly - maybe for Emma?

Cool fun!

Not so fun was Emma vomiting a number of times overnight and then again in the car today. She keeps saying to me “I’m not gonna bomit any more mummy, I’m feeling much better now” while asking for bananas (they are a decent price again!) so I hope it is over with. Poor girl.

Ceramic Painting

WOW! I just tried ceramic painting today and I love it! I can see myself doing this again for sure. It is quite easy and the colours are so bright. I used the Pebeo Porcelaine ceramic paints. I bought some white ceramic pieces - you can get these very cheaply from the dollar stores. You will also need masking tape and sticky dots.

The first thing I did was put a strip of masking tape around the rim of the pieces (I have to check this further but I believe you shouldn’t have the paint in contact with food) and then stuck little sticky dots all over the mugs and creamer. Make sure you press them down well as you don’t want the paint to seep underneath. You could also use star stickers or square stickers. I took a photo of this step but it didn’t come out properly so you will just have to imagine.

Then I used the Turquoise with a brush and covered the mugs. I waited a little while and then sponged it off a bit, which gave it some nice texture. Then I waited until it was touch dry and used sharp tweezers to pull the sticky dots off and carefully tore the masking tape off. If there is some paint that has seeped under the dots, just use a cotton bud (Q-Tip) dipped in water to carefully wipe the excess paint off. You can also use a baby wipe to remove larger areas if you really muck it up.

Next, use a small paintbrush to roughly paint the bright dots in the middle, using Coral Red. I waited again until that was touch dry and then used a fine black Porcelaine pen to outline the dots and draw a sketchy border along the rim. The pen is great, although it takes a steady hand.

Here is the end result - how good do these look? :)

I need to wait until tomorrow and then put them in the oven for 35 minutes and they will be dishwasher proof. I am definitely going to buy some more ceramic pieces to do this again!

And here is the product shot - they should use this for their catalogue!

These will be Christmas presents for someone - I still haven’t decided who!
