Today was Jack’s birthday party. He had a few friends who couldn’t make it and one who didn’t turn up so it was Jack and three of his best friends from school. Last year, in Kindy, we had his first proper party with friends from school and there were about 10 kids, girls and boys. This year, suddenly girls weren’t wanted. It was a boy’s only affair this year. Oh, how quickly they grow up.
(not many photos to share, sorry - can’t post other people’s kids up here on the big scary internet)
So as it was to be a boy’s only party, we decided to really make it a boy’s day. I asked Paul if he would come up with the ideas and run the show on the day. I was happy to clean the house and get some food organised but I wanted to almost just be an observer for the party and let “the boys” get on with it. We even shipped Emma off to a friend’s house a few streets away. She was happy because she got to go and play with a friend and her big sister (the big sister is a friend of Jack’s from school) and have a girl’s tea party.

So with Paul in charge, I wondered what he would come up with. The afternoon’s activities consisted of things like:
- Sponge Throwing: one person has a big sponge and a bucket of water, dunks the sponge and throws it at their team member who is on the other side of a big bench seat, throw it back and forth, dunk it in water, scream and run around a lot
- Jelly Bobbing: a big flat dish of jelly with some lollies buried in it, like Apple Bobbing but messier - unfortunately being the Modern Age, the other boys were very concerned about hygiene and germs and didn’t want to put their heads in the jelly or even touch it really. Paul and I thought this was very strange and amusing.
- Fizzy Towers of Fun: after watching MythBusters on Monday night, Paul knew it would be a great activity for the party. The crazy TV science dudes showed us an amazing fizzing shooting tower that occurs when you drop a Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke. There were high hopes for this activity at the party, but unfortunately Paul didn’t realise that the Diet Coke had to be the big bottle (like, 2L) and not the little tiny bottles. We got a bit of a fizz but not what we expected. oh well.
- Running Races and Relay Races: standard fare, designed to tire the boys out and get rid of testosterone buildup that occurred every so often in the struggle to share toys
It was also raining all afternoon, so the boys were very happy to be allowed to run around and play in the rain. Simple fun!

A great party was had by all, with only a little bit of squabbling and pushing and shoving. Loads of squeals of laughter, wet and messy fun and happy boys! Tired parents and yes, some yummy cake left over for after dinner tonight.
